Relay For Life for IOW, Surry: The meeting will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Benn’s UMC, 14571 Benn’s Church Blvd., Smithfield. Windsor AARP: Chapter 5309 will meet at 10 a.m. in the Windsor Ruritan Clubhouse. The guest speaker will be Sam Mizelle, a Medicare access resource specialist with Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia. She will speak on the basics of Medicare, different types of plans and when you can change them, and medication costs. Craft and Chat: This takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on the third Thursday of each month. If you like scrapbooking, quilting, knitting, crocheting or making any other crafts, come to the Smithfield Library, 255 James St. Call 357-2264 for details.

 

Friday, March 22

Bethlehem Ruritan Jam: Stephanie Poole and The Dallas Band will perform from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the clubhouse, 140 Manning Road, Suffolk. There is no admission charge. Donations to the band go in the tip jar, so please give generously. Soft drinks, BBQ, hot dogs, snacks and desserts will be available for purchase. Flea market: The Woman’s Club of Smithfield Inc. is having its annual Giant Flea Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Smithfield Center, 220 N. Church St., Smithfield. For more information, email smithfieldwomansclub1@gmail.com.

Finger painting for adults: Create an impressionistic painting with a variety of tools, including your fingers, at The Arts Center @ 319 (319 Main St., downtown Smithfield) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a hands-on, full-contact, 3-hour workshop taught by artist Barbara Lively Mastaglio, open to students ages 16 and up of all skill levels. The fee is $55 for Isle of Wight Arts League members and $65 for non-members, plus a materials fee of $14 for canvases, paint and the use of all tools provided. Old-Fashioned Country Breakfast: This will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. by the Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545, 223 Washington St., across from the library and YMCA. The menu features scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits, gravy, hash browns, corn bread, fried salt spot and mixed fruit. Coffee and juice are included with a $7 donation. Omelet to order is an additional $2. Children age 6-12 are $4 and children under 6 eat free. All proceeds go to support the many activities and programs of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 in Smithfield.

Live music: The community is invited to join Sgt. (USMC) Jayton D. Patterson VFW Post 4411 at 3385 Beaver Dam Road, Franklin, for a free live music event from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the smoke-free Charles Butler Hall. The New City Sound band will entertain with a blend of country, light rock and oldies. The band will be performing for tips, so please give generously. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. There will be food available for purchase.

Boots & Bling: The Paul D. Camp Community College Foundation will hold its spring fundraiser, Boots & Bling in the Regional Workforce Development Center, 100 N. College Dr., Franklin. Casual country attire is requested for the auction, dinner and dance. Open bar and silent auction begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person. Jewelry workshop – flat spiral bracelet: Learn the basics of the flat spiral stitch with instructor Diane Milner. This workshop will be held at The Arts Center @ 319 (319 Main St., downtown Smithfield) from 1 to 4 p.m., and will include the completion of a 7-inch or 8-inch bracelet with a sterling or gold-filled clasp. Jewelry workshop – basic stringing: This class, taught by artist Diane Milner at The Arts Center @ 319 (319 Main St., downtown Smithfield) from 1 to 4 p.m., includes a discussion of the elements of design, introduction of tools and binding (beading wire, clasps, crimps and crimp covers) necessary to make jewelry. Students will string a simple bracelet and apply a clasp. The cost is $20 for Isle of Wight Arts League members and $30 for non-members. Another session will be held on Thursday, April 4, also from 1 to 4 p.m. To register, call 357-7707 no later than one week before the desired class.

 

Friday, April 5

Scholarship deadline: Applications for the Delta Kappa Gamma-Gamma Epsilon Vaughan Scholarship are due April 5. Graduating seniors who attend school or live in Isle of Wight County, and who intend to pursue a career in education, are eligible to apply for this $1,000 scholarship. Oyster roast: The Chuckatuck Ruritan Club will have its 43rd annual Oyster Roast from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Rose Farm on Everets Road. Tickets are $35 in advance ($40 at the gate) and are available at Pretlow & Pretlow, P.C., 100 Bank St., Suffolk, Saunders Supply Company in Chuckatuck and the office of Dr. J. Dwight Bradshaw and Dr. Brian Briesemeister, Suffolk.
