Saturday, Sept. 15

BBQ: Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 are sponsoring this fundraiser. Pick up a BBQ Pork Butt prepared using Carter’s secret process and sauce, or a fish and chips meal in the True Value parking lot from 10 a.m. until all is gone. A whole pork butt costs $25, and will feed the whole family with plenty of leftovers. Fish (four pieces) and fries with a soft drink or water costs $8; just fish or fries for $4. All funds will be dedicated to sustaining their efforts in supporting the local community.

Cooking with the Hunters: The Crab Tasting (fried and steamed crabs) has been cancelled due to an early forecast. A new date will be announced later. For more information, call 556-5403.

IW Comprehensive Plan: Isle of Wight County will have a third set of public hearings on its proposed comprehensive plan, “Envisioning the Isle.” One will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and another will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., both at the Carrsville Ruritan Clubhouse, 5336 Carrsville Highway, Carrsville. AARP Meeting: The Windsor Chapter No. 5309 will meet at 10 a.m. in the Windsor Ruritan Community House, 14 Community Drive. The guest speaker will be Lt. Donnie Brown, Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office. His topic will be about the Project Lifesaver Program. Please join us and bring non-perishable food items for our Annual Community Food Drive. Business After Hours: The Bank of Southside Virginia, 115 Main St., downtown Smithfield, will host the next Isle of Wight Chamber business networking event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to members and prospective members of the Isle of Wight-Smithfield-Windsor Chamber of Commerce.

 

Friday, Sept. 21

Meet local legislators: A meet-and-greet of representatives who vote on senior issues takes place from 9 to 11 a.m. in AmeriCare Plus, 13478 Carrolton Blvd. This program is free, but reservations are required. Book signing: As a kickoff to their Legacy of Writers activities on Saturday, the Isle of Wight Writers’ Group will host a meet and greet book signing with Smithfield historical fiction author Doris Gwaltney from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mansion on Main Bed and Breakfast, 36 Main St., downtown Smithfield. Fall craft show, bazaar: The auxiliary of the Sgt. Jayton D. Patterson USMC VFW Post 4411 will host the fourth annual event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a lot of different crafts and tons of vendors. Brunswick stew sale going on, too. Door prizes and more. Come hungry and ready to shop. The post is located at 3385 Beaverdam Road, Franklin.

Virginia Big Game Contest: The 79th annual Bear, Deer and Turkey Contest will be on Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23 on the Southampton County Fairgrounds, 25374 New Market Road, Courtland. Contest will feature Eastern/Western Regional and State Finals. A historical category is included. Game will be scored using the VA Scoring System and will be entered into the Official Virginia Record Book. Entries will be accepted on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The doors open on Sunday at 10 a.m., awards at 3 p.m. This event is sponsored by Virginia Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Bethlehem Ruritan Jam: The program will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Bethlehem Ruritan Club House, 140 Manning Road, Suffolk. The featured performer will be Mike Evans and The Band-it Band. There is no admission charge, but a tip jar for the band, so give generously. There will be food, soft drinks and desserts available for purchase. Saturday, Sept. 29

Cemetery Preservation Workshop: Sign up to learn how to properly clean headstones and monuments. This will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Virginia’s oldest open cemetery. Volunteer spots available to the first 25 registrants. St. Luke’s Education Coordinator Rachel Popp will lead volunteers about learning about and applying authorized headstone and monument cleaning techniques in the Ancient Cemetery. First Saturdays Artisan Market: Local artisans with unique specialties in stained glass creations, forged metal art, handmade brooms, handcrafted and repurposed furniture, silver jewelry, wearable art, herbal soaps, local writers and books, oil paintings, handcrafted pens, knit and crochet, quilts, folk art, pottery, carved and turned wood, handcrafted knives, Native American crafts, locally grown produce, craft demonstrations and more. Windsor Town Center grand opening: The Town of Windsor will celebrate the grand opening of its new Windsor Town Center, adjacent to Georgie D. Tyler Middle School. A time for the event has not yet been announced.

Sundays at Four: The concert series presents “The John Bullard Quartet — banjo, violin, cello and piano” in Christ Episcopal Church, 111 S. Church St., downtown Smithfield. John Bullard has gained international attention for his work in developing and transcribing classical repertoire for the five string banjo. He is joined by pianist Markus Compton, violinist Francoise Moquin and cellist Schuyler Slack. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students.
