The Phi Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. recently awarded scholarships to three college-bound high school graduates from Surry, Windsor and Smithfield high schools. The sorority encourages and supports the advancement of educational opportunities and recognizes the importance of financial assistance in the process.

Recipients of the $1,000 academic scholarships are JhaDee Moody, of Surry High School; Ayla Thomas, of Smithfield High School; and Demari Johnson, of Windsor High School.

“Phi Chi Omega is pleased to recognize the academic excellence of these deserving young scholars,” said Adrian Brown-Taylor, chair of the scholarship committee.

“We are excited to make a positive investment in their future and look forward to hearing about their continuing achievements,” said vice president Betty Newby.

The competitive scholarship is awarded yearly and is based on several criteria including grade point average, community service, leadership experience and a competitive essay. Information about the awards is sent to each high school in the two communities the local sorority serves, Surry and Isle of Wight counties. Phi Chi Omega has awarded scholarships since the chapter’s chartering in March 2001 and has contributed more than $20,000 to deserving scholars.

The scholarship initiatives are funded through fundraising activities, and Phi Chi Omega wishes to thank the Surry and Isle of Wight communities for their support in these endeavors.
