A man operating a black motorcycle fled from a Virginia State Police trooper during a traffic stop Sunday afternoon in Isle of Wight County, leading to a pursuit that ended in a wooded area of Suffolk.

According to Virginia State Police, the incident began around 3:15 p.m. May 25 when a trooper attempted to stop the motorcycle near the intersection of Carrsville Highway and Walters Highway for improperly displaying a license plate. The motorcyclist refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed.

The pursuit ended when the motorcycle crashed behind a residence in the 8100 block of South Quay Road in Suffolk. The driver then fled on foot into a heavily wooded area.

A brief foot pursuit ensued, but due to the terrain, state police disengaged and called for assistance from canine units. Franklin and Suffolk police departments responded and conducted a track in the area with K-9 units. The Virginia State Police Aviation Unit also assisted by providing aerial support. The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.

Despite an extensive search and coordinated perimeter efforts, the suspect was not located, and the search was eventually suspended without apprehending the rider.

The investigation remains ongoing.
