Windsor town leaders estimated Thursday, Feb. 20, that the town received between eight to 10 inches of snow as part of a significant winter storm that unfolded across the area on Wednesday, Feb. 19, and Thursday.
On Thursday evening, Mayor George Stubbs indicated that he did not observe any major impacts to the town aside from people either staying in their homes Thursday or businesses getting a delayed start to the day.
Evaluating the amount of snow Windsor received, he said, “I would say from measuring over at Community (Drive) on top of the trash can sitting right out in the middle, it was a little over nine inches.”
On Thursday morning, Councilman Jake Redd said, “Some places in my yard have probably 10 inches from it building up in a corner, or like a foot.”
After taking a rough measurement of a more standard area in his yard, he said, “It looks like at least eight (inches), probably. But it’s coming down pretty good right now too.”
Stubbs said he rode through town Thursday morning around 9:30 a.m., and he gave high praise to the Virginia Department of Transportation for its work on the main thoroughfares.
“Main streets and (U.S. Route) 460 were clear,” he said. “They’ve done a very good job.”
He noted that secondary streets had not been addressed yet, but he indicated that this was understandable.
“I think some of the (town’s) businesses, they were kind of a little late getting there and getting started, and I understand that with the road conditions like they had,” he said.
He indicated that he had not heard of any town infrastructure issues created by the storm.
His only concern pertained to the parts of roads that were shaded, like part of Shiloh Drive coming off of Church Street.
“I would be a little bit concerned about them possibly refreezing tonight,” he said. “But overall from what I saw, our streets were clear, traffic was very, very light. When I came out of Community Drive back out to 460, I looked east and west, and I only saw one vehicle. … And I’m thinking, ‘Hey, you don’t see this too often.’”
