The Woman’s Club of Windsor Inc. recently voted to add a new scholarship to its offerings that will specifically benefit a female student who will be going to a trade school.

A club news release noted that the Windsor High School Class of 1967 recently held a reunion at the Windsor Community House with the Woman’s Club assisting with preparation of the meal. Individuals in the class donated $700 to the club.

At the February club meeting, members voted to present a new scholarship in the amount of $700 to a female senior who will be attending a trade school. 

This is in addition to the two scholarships the club already makes available to students graduating from Windsor High School who will be entering a four-year college.

Applications for all three scholarships will soon be available in the Guidance Office at WHS.

The Woman’s Club of Windsor Inc. was organized in May 1930 and has been a big part of “Team Windsor” since that time. 

“It has received the support of the residents, the businesses, other clubs in town and the Town of Windsor since the beginning,” Woman’s Club officials stated in the release.

In addition to offering scholarships, the club sponsors two girls to attend Girls State — one from WHS and one from Isle of Wight Academy — as well as one student to attend the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Class. The club assists the Windsor Ruritan Club with cleaning and maintenance of the Windsor Community House and supports the art departments at Carrsville Elementary School, Windsor Elementary School, Georgie D. Tyler Middle School and Windsor High School.

“We recently held our biggest fundraiser of the year, where 162 Boston butts were sold, cooked and distributed, with the help of three husbands, several members of the Windsor Ruritan Club, as well as many club members,” Woman’s Club officials stated. “Members also prepared baked beans and coleslaw, which was also available to purchase.”

One of the Woman’s Club’s newest projects is implementing the use of Pokémon GO to make everyone aware of several historical and fun locations in the area. As noted by www.Webwise.ie, Pokémon GO is “a smartphone game that uses GPS technology and Augmented Reality to catch and train Pokémon characters while players explore the real world.”

“And if you haven’t seen the newest frog in town, stop by the Windsor Community House and take a look at S.P.I.R.I.T., provided by the Windsor Ruritan Club and the Woman’s Club, with the help of Dewitt Holland, who painted the frog,” Woman’s Club officials stated.

The S.P.I.R.I.T. frog is a PokéStop. Now people can see it on a virtual map, and when the person walks close enough to it, they will be able to spin the frog picture on their phone and read the history written about it.
