Windsor High School’s varsity girls basketball team was recognized with eight selections among the 2022-23 all-region and all-district honors, led by junior center Shamyah Stephenson, who made the first team at both levels.

The Lady Dukes finished the season with an overall record of 17-7, placing second in the district during the regular season and in the district tournament. They earned the No. 5 seed in the Region 2A Tournament and advanced as far as the quarterfinal round.

Windsor players joining Stephenson among the All-Region 2A honorees included freshman guard/forward Mariah Stephenson, who made the second team, and junior guard Keaera Kea-Towns, who received honorable mention.

Shamyah and Mariah both made the all-district first team. Kea-Towns made the second team, and junior guard/forward La’Desha Warren and senior guard/forward Melissa Carr received honorable mentions.

“I feel pretty good with the representation this season,” Lady Dukes Head Coach Wilhelm Johns said. “This is the first time in a long time — if not ever — that we had someone make the all-region (first) team.”

He indicated that it was also special to have multiple Windsor players receive regional recognition.

Shamyah Stephenson, who transferred to WHS and made her debut with the team last season, repeated as an all-district first-team member in addition to earning her inaugural first-team all-region honor.

“I knew she would make it,” Johns said. “She is a special player. She plays inside and outside and handles the ball. Teams had to game-plan for her.”

She averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist per game this season.

Mariah Stephenson’s district and regional honors came as a result of her producing per-game averages of 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and one assist in 2022-23.

“I was not shocked at that either,” Johns said. “As a freshman she displayed her talent and has great upside. Other coaches saw her talent and were amazed she was just a freshman.”

This was Kea-Towns’ second year of receiving all-district recognition, and Johns indicated that her effort, leadership and ability helped lead to her first regional accolade this year as well.

“Keaera is a hard worker and leader,” Johns said, noting he was not shocked by the recognition she received this season. “She is tough on the defensive end of the court. She leaves it all on the court every night. She is one of our captains.”

Kea-Towns averaged 10 points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist per game this season.
