The Wakefield Foundation’s annual Wakefield Community Day was a success in 2022 thanks in part to strong organization and excellent weather.

The event took place Oct. 8 on the grounds of the foundation’s building, located at 100 Wilson Ave. in Wakefield.

“We had a beautiful day,” said Gayle Lanier, who is a board member of the Wakefield Historical Association. “Joan Drewry always does an excellent job of pulling the festivities together for a fun day of stew, children’s games, vendor sales and the parade.”

A foundation news release noted that at the event, the Wakefield Historical Association was sponsoring an exhibit inside the foundation building including the large baby doll collection of Cheryl Boykin West; a large collection of toy tractors owned by Charles “Sonny” Boykin; and a hallway display of Wakefield’s history in pictures.

Also, the historical association had its latest book for sale titled “Wakefield – A Journey in Time.” It was written by Ralph Seeley, who is also a WHA board member.

“The book tells the story of 11 families and how they came to this community from another country,” Lanier said. “Two of the stories are of people from Southampton County — Anna Antis Bryant, of Ivor, and the late Marion Bradshaw, from Sedley.”

Lanier noted that copies of the very successful book are available at Ivor Furniture, which is located at 35569 General Mahone Blvd. in Ivor.
