The Public Relations and Communications Committee of the Woman’s Club of Windsor is engaging with visitors and residents of Windsor in a new, fun way.

A WCW news release noted that the club has placed a geocache titled WCW #1 Woman’s Club Mural near the revitalized ghost sign at the corner of South Court Street and East North and West Street.

The mural is on a one-story brick storefront that dates to the early 1900s. The remnants of advertising panels for Ballard’s Flour, R.A. Rhodes General Merchandise and Ballard’s Insurance and Feeds were revitalized to celebrate the rich history of the town, and a new panel showcasing the town’s newest frog mascot and the businesses that supported the mural was added.

Geocaching is the world’s largest treasure hunt according to geocaching.com. “Participants use the Geocaching app and/or a GPS device to navigate to cleverly hidden containers called geocaches.”

WCW #1 is a small locking food storage container like the ones one might have in their refrigerator storing leftovers for lunch. It contains information about the mural nearby, a log for the finders to sign and a variety of stickers and pencils for the finders to have, including some hopping frogs celebrating the new town mascot.

The geocache “finds” are also logged on geocaching.com. Here are few of the comments from those who have found WCW #1:

• “Drove down from Richmond to visit family and of course find a few geocaches. Thanks for placing this cache for us to find. Log was signed and cache was returned as found. Quick find on this one.”
• “I’ve passed this mural many times. Nice to know a little more history about it though. TFTC!” (TFTC is geocaching shorthand for Thanks for the Cache).
• “Nice p&g. My girls loved the stickers and frogs. Left a smile behind. Tftc” (p&g is Park and Grab).

The committee has plans to place additional caches around the town of Windsor highlighting the history of the town and some interesting town features.
