With students set to return to the classroom next week, Isle of Wight County Schools held its teacher convocation on Aug. 26.

Much like a high school pep rally, the annual event opened with performances by Smithfield High School’s band, JROTC color guard and Windsor High School’s cheerleaders.

The event featured remarks by Isle of Wight’s new superintendent, Dr. Theo Cramer, School Board Chairwoman Denise Tynes and 2021-22 divisionwide Teacher of the Year Kimberly Miller-Cussick of Georgie D. Tyler Middle School.

The event culminated with each school competing in a spirit challenge, which this year entailed each building’s staff producing videos on the theme of “ISLE,” an acronym for Inspire, Succeed, Lead and Empower. Windsor High School won the challenge and will get to display the division’s coconut trophy in its central office throughout the school year.

The school system plans to publish each school’s video on the division’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
