Isle of WIght County Schools had several teams compete and place in the Great Computer Challenge held in May. The long-running event is a joint project of Hampton Roads broadcasting station WHRO, the Consortium for Interactive Instruction, and Old Dominion University.  It provides a competitive opportunity for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, from public and private schools, to demonstrate their knowledge of various computer applications and programming skills.

Windsor High School students brought home two awards.  Receiving Honorable Mention was the Desktop Presentations team of Keaera Kea-Towns, Jadelyn Miller, Ladesha Warren, and Javontae McNeil.

The Integrated Applications team placed third.  Team members included  Journey Johnson,  Cheyenne  Harris, Jasmine Lassiter, and Jaiona Rich.  The teams were coached by Tyler Mosley, technology teacher, and Sharon Smallwood-Moore, media specialist, at Windsor High.

Teams of third through fifth graders competed in the category of Visual Programming/Block Coding (Level 2). Each team had two hours to collaborate, complete, and submit a project using the Scratch drag-and-drop programming language that solved a problem designed by the challenge coordinators.

The Carrollton Elementary team, consisting of only third graders, created a working “piano” with which one could play individual notes by pressing keys on the keyboard. The team earned first place in the category.  The members of Carrollton Elementary’s Great Computer Challenge team include Alice Thomsen, Penelope George, and Lance Lerma with alternates Violet Pealo and Benjamin Corelli Soares.  The team was coached by Michelle Pealo, computer science teacher for Carrollton Elementary.
