August 7 — Isle of Wight County’s School Board acquiesces to state authority on mask-wearing in schools. Gov. Ralph Northam essentially made mask-wearing mandatory, but some school officials had wanted them to be optional.

 

August 7 — Windsor and Isle of Wight hosted National Night Out on Aug. 3, despite the threat of rain.

 

August 14 — The Windsor Town Council unanimously supported a resolution in support of Riverside Health System establishing a hospital in Isle of Wight County.

 

September 18 — Local students returned to class on Sept. 7, but issues including bus delays marred the first week of school.

 

September 18 — Isle of Wight County Schools planned an equity audit to “illuminate the school system’s history and current reality” and “make recommendations about practical, strategic and actionable next steps toward becoming an anti-racist organization.”

 

September 25 — A shooting at the Safco Distribution Center on Sept. 23 resulted in the death of Rakim Breeden, 26, of Como, North Carolina. Preston Kyle Thomas, 23, is charged in the death.

 

October 23 — Isle of Wight School Board Chairwoman Jackie Carr withdrew from her candidacy for re-election just days before the vote, and School Board member Julia Perkins also resigned from the board the same week.

 

October 23 — The Virginia Department of Health recommended denial of Riverside Health System’s proposed hospital in Isle of Wight County.

 

November 6 — Big winners on Election Day included John Collick, who won election against Jackie Carr for the Carrsville District on the School Board; Michael Cunningham, who defeated Todd Meier for the Hardy District on the School Board; Emily Brewer, who easily won re-election to the House 64th District; and Rudolph Jefferson and Don Rosie, running unopposed for Board of Supervisors.

 

November 13 — Michael Vines was appointed to the Windsor District seat Perkins vacated, while Cunningham filled the Hardy seat early.

 

November 20 — Windsor Ruritan Club, the fourth-oldest Ruritan Club in the nation, celebrated its delayed 90th anniversary as well as its 91st anniversary with Ruritan National officials in attendance.

 

November 27 — The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the existence of body camera footage and internal affairs reports related to former Windsor Police officer Joe Gutierrez when he worked for IWCSO, but declined to release the records.

 

December 11 — The Woman’s Club of Windsor Inc. dedicated a new mural on one of the oldest buildings in the town.

 

January 1, 2022 — Attorney General Mark Herring announced Dec. 30, 2021, that his office had filed a lawsuit against the Town of Windsor, alleging the Windsor Police Department has operated in a discriminatory and illegal manner by engaging in a pattern of unconstitutional and discriminatory policing. The investigation that led to the lawsuit was spurred by the Dec. 5, 2020, traffic stop of Lt. Caron Nazario.
