Isle of Wight County Schools received recognition at the Virginia School Boards Association’s annual convention in November for excellence in workers’ compensation.

IWCS was one of eight school divisions recognized in VACORP’s Excellence in Risk Management Awards. VACORP provides coverage and risk-management services to school divisions, public entities and related organizations across Virginia.

Isle of Wight placed in the workers’ compensation category for divisions with 5,001 to 10,000 students.

“It is an honor to recognize school divisions that are excelling in risk management and are truly putting a focus on strong safety, injury prevention and property protection practices,” said Dr. Lee Brannon, School Specialist of VACORP, “It is our hope that school divisions across the commonwealth will learn from the award recipients regarding the best practices in risk management so that proactive practices can be emulated across Virginia.”

Accepting the award for Isle of Wight County Schools were Superintendent Dr. Jim Thornton and School Board members Michael Cunningham of the Hardy District, Renee Dial of the Newport District, Denise Tynes of the Smithfield District, Michael Vines of the Windsor District and incoming Carrsville District board member John Collick, who will take his seat in January.
