The Edwards Family Isle of Wight County Scholarship Committee recently announced that Shivam Hetal Patel is the recipient for 2021.

Patel is the son of Minaj and Hetal Patel and is a graduate of Windsor High School and the Governor’s School for Science and Technology. He will attend the University of Virginia, where he plans to major in science and chemistry, focusing on a future career in medicine.

Since 2014, Patel has volunteered in his grandfather’s free medical clinic in India and is currently mentored by an internal medicine doctor in Portsmouth. He enjoys soccer, track and field, and is fluent in four languages.

The Edwards scholarship, founded in 2000, is a $3,000 renewable four-year award.  Applications are accepted from graduating seniors from Windsor High, Smithfield High, and Isle of Wight Academy. The fund is administered by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.
