As reported last week, the Windsor Woman’s Club, a member of the GFWC, recently decided to put a name to its annual scholarship program. The membership chose the late Dorothy G. “Dot” Gwaltney to carry the title.

The club presents $1,000 each for a male and female graduating from Windsor High School. This year, Stephen W. Branch and Alexya G. Massey were chosen, and congratulations to them.

Criteria are academic excellence, community service, extracurricular activities and financial need. It’s the second aspect that stands out in our thinking because Gwaltney was known for her active involvement in the club’s mission to serve its community.

As one of the group’s members recalled, “’Dot’ could be counted on to work.”

That is something for scholarship recipients to consider. In the future, as now, they also will be called on to serve other people, other communities, in one way or another. By doing so, they will also honor the monetary gift and its namesake.

We encourage other civic and social organizations to also consider personalizing their regular contributions to their respective territories.
