Sanford ‘Sandy’ Wanner to take interim position in Windso

WINDSOR

Friday, April 17 was Michael Stallings’ last day as town manager of Windsor. His first day as Smithfield’s town manager will be on Monday, April 20.

Then, on Tuesday, April 21, Sanford “Sandy” Wanner, who had been serving as Smithfield’s interim town manager for the past few months, will travel to Windsor to assume Stalling’s former position, albeit still on an interim basis.

Windsor’s Town Council approved Wanner’s contract earlier this week during its first virtual meeting of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Windsor Mayor Glyn Willis, Wanner had come to the attention of the town via a pool of Virginia Municipal League candidates, and was chosen for his previous experience in the Isle of Wight community and as an interim manager.

Willis anticipates that the town will hire a new, permanent town manager within the next four to six months, but cautioned that the COVID-19 pandemic and associated travel restrictions may impact that timeline. The town has already posted an employment advertisement on the VML website and has already received some interest in the position, the mayor said.

The town is also seeking a new planning and zoning administrator. Its last P&Z director, Ben Sullivan, resigned on March 13. The plan, according to Stallings, is for the town to hire someone part-time to process zoning permits one day a week until the town can find a new full-time administrator.
