Next month, Del. Emily Brewer (R-64) will co-host town halls devoted to veterans. Brewer will be joined by Virginia Department of Veteran Services Secretary Carlos Hopkins to review and discuss 2019 legislative changes that will affect veterans.

The first will be at noon on Monday, Aug. 19, in Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 Cedar St., Smithfield. Another is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Disputanta Community Center, 10010 B. County Drive.

Included both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be Mobile Veteran Resource Centers offering services for men and women who have served the country. These will include the DVS assisting veterans with  benefits claims and education employment opportunities. The Department of Motor Vehicles will help veterans to get REAL IDs, acquire the ‘Veteran’ indicator on their license and complete nearly any DMV transaction. Representatives of the Eastern Virginia Medical School, VCU Health with healthcare education, blood pressure testing, body measurements and diabetes screenings.

“Between Prince George County’s Fort Lee and the dense veteran and military population across Surry, Isle of Wight, and Suffolk, the 64th District is home to one of the largest military and veteran populations in the world,” Brewer stated in a press release. “Most of the district is rural and it can be difficult for our veterans, many of whom are disabled, to reach the services they need.”

She continued, “In 2018, I organized and hosted the first-ever 64th District Mobile Veteran Resource Center to bring these services to our veterans. I will be hosting another round of MVRC events this summer and need your help spreading the word.

Brewer said these events will be non-partisan and non-political, and also urged people to share information about these sessions with other veterans.
