FRANKLIN — Edith Poole Whitfield, 85, passed away on July 20, 2019, in the East Pavilion.

Edith was born in Pine Level, North Carolina, and was a daughter of the late Chester Hilirion and Hortense Price Poole.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas E. Whitfield; a sister, Irene P. Campbell; two brothers-in law, Stanley Campbell and Smith Creech; and two daughters-in law, Nancy Rose and Susan Whitfield.

Edith was retired from the accounting department of Union Camp Corporation after 33 years of service.

Left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Rebecca R. Gwaltney (Billy) of Windsor; a son, Richard C. “Ricky” Rose of Wendell, North Carolina; two stepsons, Tom E Whitfield of Decatur, Georgia, and Billy Mike Whitfield of Petersburg; one sister, Jean Poole Creech of Arapahoe, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Ashley G. Smith (Charlie), Hollis G. Bridges (Bobby), Brett G. Bowie (Daniel), Jennifer R. Merser (Joel), Kathleen R. Rodham (Welby); five great-grandchildren, Charles and Katherine Smith, Lane Bridges, Olivia and Ivy Merser; and several nieces and nephews, especially Dottie Campbell Harcum, who was like a daughter to Edith.

The private graveside service was at Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin with the Rev. Sam Askew officiating.

The family would like to thank the caregivers of the south wing of East Pavilion for their care and kindness to Edith, and suggests that memorial donations be made to Franklin Animal Shelter, 1024 Pretlow St., Franklin, VA  23851, or your favorite animal charity.
