WAKEFIELD

The second annual Wakefield Ruritan BASH (BBQ and Shad Homecoming) will take place on Satuday, April 20, at the Wakefield Sportsman’s Club. Albeit the Saturday before Easter, a large crowd is anticipated, surpassing last year’s attendance of roughly 400.

For those not familiar with tge event here is a little background: For many years the Wakefield Ruritan Club hosted the “Shad Planking.” A politically charged event where political figures and candidates would attend and the cooking of shad and roe were put on display for all to see. Unfortunately, the Shad Planking had run its course, so the club decided to go in a different direction. The BASH was then born; an event to put on display everything that the tri-county area (Surry, Sussex and Southampton) has to offer its residents. The members want to highlight specific areas such as fire and rescue, healthcare, and other local businesses which help keep the area thriving.

The proceeds go directly to local fire and rescue departments as well as local youth athletic organizations.

Specifically, local fire and rescue departments on site will perform demonstrations for the attendees, a petting zoo as well as an Easter egg hunt and bounce house for the children.

Barbeque, shad, roe, baked beans all prepared on site for everyone to enjoy, and live music from The County Seat Band and Ell-O-Ell. Refreshments are also provided.

There will be various other vendors participating all in an effort to highlight the many perks people have at their fingertips in the tri-county area. The event will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. Tickets cost $30 person, or $20 under 21. Children under 10 get in free. Don’t forget, there will be five raffle prizes with tickets available for purchase before and during the event.
