Tre Powell made the most of Isle of Wight Academy’s Senior Night festivities, scoring 18 points to lead all scorers as his Chargers defeated Denbigh Baptist, 73-27, here last Friday, Feb. 8

With the Charger faithful bidding farewell to Powell and classmates Josh Savage and Hunter Hayden on their home court in Jester Gymnasium, Powell had a season high in scoring despite averaging 6.9 points per game and ranking fifth in scoring. He is third on his team in 3-point shooting with 26 on the season

The Minutemen (1-21, 0-13 in Metro Conference play) were led by Andrew Hutsell’s 8 points; no Denbigh player scored in double figures.

IWA (14-10, 9-4) raced out to a 17-8 first-quarter advantage on 9 points by Powell, including a three-pointer and 2-for-3 foul shooting. It would be another 5 minutes before Denbigh scored again and, by that time, the Chargers led 24-8.

Eric Henderson and Terell Heath each scored 20 points as Atlantic Shores defeated IWA, 62-38, here last Thursday, Feb. 7. The game was the first meeting between the teams this season in IWA’s previous 22 games.

The Chargers were paced by Powell’s 10 points.

IWA stayed with the Seahawks in the first quarter thanks to Grant Worthy’s 8 points; they lead over the visitors 17-16.

Isle of Wight’s defense held Shores to 7 points in the second quarter, but its offense couldn’t make good on the advantage, scoring only 2 points on a field goal by William Fricke. The Seahawks led at halftime, 23-19.

But with IWA’s points of the half coming at the 4:37 mark, Shores rattled off 20 of the next 23 points scored into the third quarter to take a 36-22 lead. They had another run, 8-0, in the fourth quarter to open up a 26-point lead with 1:58 left to play.

The Chargers wrap up their Metro Conference regular season with games at Portsmouth Christian Tuesday and Atlantic Shores on Thursday. Varsity contests begin at 7 p.m. Metro Conference Tournament play begins next week.
