Old-Fashioned Country Breakfast: This will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. by the Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545, 223 Washington St., across from the library and YMCA. The menu features scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits, gravy, hash browns, corn bread, fried salt spot and mixed fruit. Coffee and juice are included with a $7 donation. Omelet to order is an additional $2. Children age 6-12 are $4 and children under 6 eat free. All proceeds go to support the many activities and programs of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 in Smithfield.

Veterans’ Dinner: American Legion Post 49 will host hospitalized veterans from the Hampton VA for a dinner and entertainment starting at noon. This is always a fun event with the veterans getting up and dancing with auxiliary members. The event will be in the post at 818 S. Church St., Smithfield.

Bethlehem Ruritan Jam: The Code Blue Bluegrass Band will perform from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the clubhouse, 140 Manning Road, Suffolk. There is no admission charge. Donations to the band go in the tip jar, so please give generously. Soft drinks, BBQ, hot dogs, snacks, and desserts will be available for purchase. IOW Citizens Association: The group will meet at 7 p.m in the community room of Sentara St. Luke’s, 20209 Sentara Way, Carrollton. Isle of Wight County Sheriff James Clarke will be our guest to discuss public safety issues in the county. A short business meeting will follow. Youth art class: Artist Diane Greenhalgh will teach fundamental drawing principles, painting and color theory for artists ages 6 to 12 at The Arts Center @ 319 (319 Main St., downtown Smithfield) from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. A second class will be held on Feb. 27, also from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The fee is $40 for Isle of Wight Arts League members and $50 for non-members. Each month, new projects will be offered to advance students’ skill and knowledge. Registration is required five days prior to the first session. Tell Me A Story: Starting at 10 a.m., this program is geared for children ages 3 to 5, and introduces youngsters to the symbols of Isle of Wight County and features books, songs and games. Sweetheart dinner: The Airfield 4-H Conference Center will have a Sweetheart Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Special music by Rick Bozart. The cost is $49.95 per couple. Choice of two entrées. Reservations are required. Deadline is on Thursday, Feb. 7.
Small Business Development Consultations: Free one-hour sessions with Jim Carroll from the Small Business Development Center will take place in IOW Chamber office, 100 Main St. Smithfield. Palette knife class: Create a painting of a southern magnolia using oil paint and palette knives. Artist Barbara Lively Mastaglio will teach this make-it-and-take-it, three-hour workshop for students ages 16 and up of all skill levels from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Arts Center @ 319 (319 Main St., downtown Smithfield.) The class fee is $55 for Isle of Wight Arts League members and $65 for non-members, plus a materials fee of $18, which covers canvases, paint and the use of all tools provided by the instructor. Scholarship deadline: Applications for the Delta Kappa Gamma-Gamma Epsilon Vaughan Scholarship are due April 5. Graduating seniors who attend school or live in Isle of Wight County, and who intend to pursue a career in education, are eligible to apply for this $1,000 scholarship.
