WINDSOR

The Appomattox Regional Governor School Dragons ultimately won their game against the Windsor High School Dukes on Wednesday evening, but the hosts didn’t make it easy.

Through most of the first quarter, Windsor were successful in staying ahead even if by two to three points. By the 1:42 mark, they were tied at 13 all. With four seconds to go, one of the Dukes got the basket that put the score at 15-13.

The teams were tied again within 15 seconds of the second quarter, then were at 17 all with a little more than 3 minutes remaining. The Dragons often got control of the ball in that quarter, but that didn’t guarantee points, thanks to the Dukes’ work in blocking shots or getting the ball back for themselves. ARGS did score once more at :41 seconds left, putting the score at 19-17 in their favor.

Returning from the half, the Dragons were able to get and stay ahead, but their margin was at most five to six points. The Dukes got their score up to tie at 31 all by 1:45 left. But the guests then picked up two more baskets plus a couple of free throws, 37-31.

The fourth quarter is when ARGS really pushed to get ahead. By 5:47, WHS was at 31 to 44, but seconds later started another ascent. The student and parents support from both sides was loud and exciting, cheering on their respective players.

At the 2:45 mark, the Dragons were only three points ahead, 46-43. Things were looking good for the Dukes until an ARGS player then got hit in the face, putting a stop not only to the game but also the momentum. Energized by what happened to their teammate, the Dragons returned to play and added several more points, albeit four from the free-throw line, making the total 55-47.

WHS Coach Eric Johnson commended the opponents.

“They came in well prepared and from a very good place,” he said. “They rallied [after the accident,] which was a big momentum shift. My hat’s off to them. We look forward to meeting them again on the 5th.”
