SMITHFIELD

A former Sundays at Four Terrific Teen, saxophonist Trey Sorrells, will return to Smithfield to give a Jazz Master Class on Saturday, Jan. 12, from 1 to 5 p.m., in the Christ Episcopal Church parish hall, 111 S. Church St.

Sorrells is a native of Portsmouth who developed a passion for playing the saxophone at an early age and attributes his powerful and soulful sound to his experiences playing in church.

He received his degree in music, majoring in jazz studies, from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Among his many honors and awards received at VCU was the John F. Kennedy Jr. Jazz Scholarship, which included serving as a member of the International Jazz Exchange Program with the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa.

Upon graduation, Sorrells moved to the D.C. metropolitan area, where he is based as a jazz artist and teacher. He is also a D’Addario Woodwind Artist, exclusively endorsing their instrumental products. Most recently, Sorrells has become an Artist in Residence at Strathmore Mansion in Maryland.

He maintains a private teaching studio of piano and saxophone with students consisting of all ages.

Sorrells also holds the saxophone position in Richmond-based band, Future Prospect. In 2016, the members released their debut album “The Climb” on the Ropeadope Recording Label, which peaked at No. 6 on the iTunes Jazz Charts. In their short time as a band, they have had the pleasure of backing a plethora of noteworthy artists and opening for internationally acclaimed artists and bands. This includes names such as Jon Bibbs, Kia Bennett, Sam Reed, Braxton Cook, Butcher Brown, No BS Brass Band, Galactic, Kneebody, amongst others.

Sundays at Four includes in its concert seasons a master class or school workshop with a guest artist that benefits students in Isle of Wight and the greater Hampton Roads area. Master classes are free and open to an observing public. You may enter and exit the session at will.
