On Tuesday afternoon, Kindergarteners through third graders at Carrsville Elementary School quickly moved in an assembly line to create Christmas cheer for servicemen and women overseas.

With the assistance of the Woman’s Club of Windsor and other volunteers, the students placed magazines, puzzles, paperback books, toiletries, candies, cookies, snacks and other goodies in boxes within 45 minutes.

“We had more stuff than we’ve ever had,” said Brenda Redd, who has organized this project for six years now. “This is the best participation ever. The kids are really getting the hang of it.”

She keeps the number of care packages at 50 because that’s all she can physically handle. They’ll be sent after Thanksgiving and arrive in time for Christmas to places “all over,” such as a big group going to the Navy’s supercarrier, the USS Ronald Reagan.

The project began when her great-nephew Ethan was in Kindergarten at the school. Redd got the idea from one of the other student’s father who was going to serve in Afghanistan — which is also one of the destinations for this year’s.

With the cooperation of the school, the project has grown ever since.
