Faulty machine showed incorrect $65K prize

Some Windsor residents who checked their Mega Millions lottery tickets at the Stop and Save convenience store on Windsor Boulevard Wednesday morning may have been told incorrectly that they had won tens of thousands of dollars.

According to John Hagerty, spokesman for the Virginia lottery, a mechanical glitch in one of the store’s computer terminals used to identify winning lottery tickets resulted in it displaying the prize amount $65,476 for at least two tickets, when the correct amount should have been around $4.

Hagerty said that while the machine had correctly identified these tickets as winners, $65,476 is not a prize offered by Mega Millions.

“The terminal was immediately removed from the store and replaced as soon as we became aware of the problem,” he added.

A total of five tickets may have resulted in the faulty machine displaying an incorrect prize amount, Hagerty said. He also confirmed that the Virginia Lottery would not have to pay out the incorrect amount.
