WINDSOR

Kristen Duffy was quite surprised when her name was announced as the 2018 Homecoming Queen at Windsor High School. This took place on the home field during halftime last Saturday, Oct. 13. Christopher Myers, her proud father, was beside Kristen as Principal Lauren Sullivan and faculty member Margaret Nelms presented her with the tiara, sash and bouquet of roses.

Duffy, who is also the daughter of Michele Myers of Windsor, plans to study musical theater at a two-year community college and then transfer to Virginia Tech. Duffy’s hobbies include playing soccer and participating on the drama competition team.

Right before that news, though, Jada Benton was named Maid of Honor for the court. Benton, the second of four senior princesses on the home field, hugged her godmother, Lisha Ricks, on hearing her name called for the title. Benton is the daughter of Calvin Benton and Kimberly Scott of Windsor. She plans to study nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University. Benton’s hobbies include shopping, reading and participating on the color guard team.

Shelby Beaber and Jami Drewry, the two other senior princesses, were also named to the court.

Beaber is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shane Beaber of Windsor. She plans to study biomedical and health sciences at Old Dominion University. Beaber’s hobbies include playing volleyball and volunteering at the animal shelter. Her father, Shane Beaber, escorted Shelby.

Drewry is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Drewry of Windsor. She plans to study cosmetology and be an entrepreneur in her future. Drewry’s hobbies include managing both the volleyball and baseball teams. Her father, Franklin Drewry, escorted Jami.

 

Junior Princesses

• Representing the freshmen class was Carlie Gavin. Carlie is the daughter of Greg and Shannon Gavin of Windsor. Carlie’s hobbies include cheerleading, swimming, and gymnastics. After high school, she plans to study physical therapy in college. Her father, Greg Gavin, escorted Carlie on the field.
• The first Sophomore Princess was Jordan Carr. Jordan is the daughter of Jim Carr and Kimberly Barnette of Zuni. Jordan’s hobbies include cheering, photography and riding fourwheelers. She plans to study nursing in college. Her father, Jim Carr, escorted Jordan.
• The second Sophomore Princess was Averi Westheimer. Averi is the daughter of Matt and Valerie Westheimer of Ivor. Averie’s hobbies include softball and cheering. She intends to study sports marketing at East Carolina University. Averi was escorted by her father, Matt Westheimer.
• The first Junior Princess was Tayah Lewis. Tayah is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Boone of Zuni. Tayah’s hobbies include being a majorette and participating in track and field. She plans to become an orthopedic surgeon and study at Harvard Medical School. Her grandfather, Rick Boone, escorted Tayah.
• The second Junior Princess was Lauren Legum. Lauren is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Legum of Windsor. Lauren’s hobbies include cheerleading, soccer and coaching at Windsor Gymnastics. She plans to study medicine at the University of Virginia. Her father, Adam Legum, escorted Lauren.
• The second Junior Princess was Alexya Massey. Alexya is the daughter of Mark Rawles and Erica Callow of Windsor. Alexya’s hobbies include playing softball, volunteering for BETA Club, and working. She plans to study medicine at a four-year college. Her father, Mark Rawles, escorted Alexya.

 

Homecoming Princes

• The first Senior Prince was Julian Delacruz. Julian is the son of Sonia and Angel Delacruz of Zuni. Julian’s hobby is playing soccer, and he plans to study theoretical physics in college. He was later named the Homecoming King at the dance that evening.
• The second Senior Prince was Travis Nathaniel Nichols. Travis is the son of Gregg and Kathleen Nichols of Carrsville. Travis’s hobbies include flying planes and playing soccer. He plans to study aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
• The third Senior Prince was Gunther Perkins. Gunther is the son of Andrew and Denise Perkins of Franklin. Gunther’s hobbies include playing football and theatre. He plans to become an outside machinist and attend The Newport News Apprentice School.
• The final Senior Prince is Dylan Thomas Stinson. Dylan is the son of Brad and Tonya Stinson of Windsor. Dylan’s hobbies include hunting, fishing and performing mechanical work. He plans to join the Navy after high school and pursue a career in construction mechanics.

 

Floats

Each class was challenged to present their best castle for a float.

The third place float goes to the Freshman Class; second place goes to the Sophomore Class float, and first place goes to the Senior Class float.

 

Marching Dukes

The Student Government Association recognized the Windsor High School Marching Dukes, which is under the leadership Broc Smith, band director; Julia Paul, the Color Guard instructor; Leyda Sanders, the drum major; and Erubey Mendiola, junior drum major.

The Marching Dukes will be competing at the 2018 Powhatan Fall Classic on Saturday, Oct. 27, and in the Norfolk Grand Illumination Holiday parade in November.
