A Smithfield High School student was arrested on Tuesday following an investigation into threats that were made against the other students via posting on social media. Lt. Tommy Potter, spokesman for Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, stated that School Resource Officers with the department were made aware of a threat, which was available for several students to see. After they informed the school resource officer and school administration, an investigation was began by this office in conjunction with the Isle of Wight County School System.

A search warrant was carried out in the 15000 block of Carrollton Boulevard, and an AR-15 rifle was removed from the home as a result of the search, stated Potter.

Paul M. Emerson, 18, was taken into custody by investigators. He was charged with two counts of communicating a threat via electronic means. Emerson was taken before a magistrate and held on no bond at Western Tidewater Regional jail.

Also charged in conjunction with this investigation was Melissa M. Jacuzzi, 51. She also resides in the 15000 block of Carrollton Blvd. Jacuzzi was charged with Obstruction of Justice, but was released on a summons to appear in court on a later date.

“The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office takes any threat communicated towards students and faculty very serious and will fully investigate these matters,” Potter said.

Lynn Briggs, division spokesperson for IWCS also stated the following on behalf of the school system, “Isle of Wight County Schools will handle this incident as a student disciplinary matter. While the school division is unable to comment about specific disciplinary action for this student, Isle of Wight County Schools will treat any and all threats against the safety of students and staff with the highest priority.”
