Contrary to any editorial cartoons or columnists we have published in the past, we really don’t think going to school is or should be a torment. If anything, we’re sometimes envious that children are attending classes and learning things we as adults now take for granted.

Think of it this way: No matter what grade level, students get the thrill — yes, really — of discovering more and more about the world around them. Teachers and attentive parents can testify to seeing when children proudly recite their ABC’s, or when they successfully solve their first arithmetic problems.

Speaking of teachers, we salute you. Your mission, which you have chosen to accept, is to supply your students with the tools needed to navigate through life. These include literacy in reading, writing, mathematics, history, geography and the principles of science, to name some of the essentials.

School is not all about “reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic.” There’s also the opportunity for athletics that not only strengthen the body and school spirit, but also teach cooperation, teamwork and good sportsmanship. Clubs such as the Future Business Leaders of America or SkillsUSA build on many classroom and athletic skills, and encourage students to explore possibilities of what they want to do later in life.

Last, but not least, are the friendships that can be made. Friends with whom to enjoy the classes, games, clubs and even the tough times.

It all makes us wish we could sit again in a classroom, if but for a day.
