Heritage Day: Heritage Day will be at Southampton Heritage Village/Agriculture and Forestry Museum on Heritage Lane, Courtland, from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The cost for adults is $5, school-age children $2, pre-schoolers are free. There will be running heritage equipment: saw mill, grist mill, printing press, large model train displays, plus hands-on trains for kids, a scavenger hunt, craft vendors, old cars, tractors, engines and music. Old-Fashioned County Breakfast: The Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 will host the meal from 7 to 10 a.m. in the post at 223 Washington St., across from the library and YMCA. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits, gravy, hash browns, corn bread, fried salt spot and mixed fruit will be featured. Coffee and juice are included with a $7 donation. An omelet to order is an additional $2. Children age 6-12 are $4 and children under 6 eat free. All proceeds go to support the many activities and programs of the post.

Watercolor Pure and Simple: This class is for intermediate and advanced artists ages 16 and up, and will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9. Ken Hobson is the instructor. This will be a fun & relaxed opportunity to paint, offering a lot of information on a variety of subjects from loose florals to realistic landscapes, family pets to birds. Students are welcome to bring their own references too. Fee is $200 for Isle of Wight Arts League Members/ $220 for non-members. IW Fair chair recognition: The Isle of Wight County Fair is celebrating 25 years. This year, the fair will hold a recognition ceremony for all past Fair Committee chairs at 6:30 p.m. on the Duke Automotive Stage. BBQ: Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 are sponsoring th is fundraiser. Pick up a BBQ Pork Butt prepared using Carter’s secret process and sauce, or a fish and chips meal in the True Value parking lot from 10 a.m. until all is gone. A whole pork butt costs $25, and will feed the whole family with plenty of leftovers. Fish (four pieces) and fries with a soft drink or water costs $8; just fish or fries for $4. All funds will be dedicated to sustaining their efforts in supporting the local community.

Fall craft show, bazaar: The auxiliary of the Sgt. Jayton D. Patterson USMC VFW Post 4411 will host the fourth annual event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a lot of different crafts and tons of vendors. Virginia Big Game Contest: The 79th annual Bear, Deer and Turkey Contest will be on Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23 on the Southampton County Fairgrounds, 25374 New Market Road, Courtland. Contest will feature Eastern/Western Regional and State Finals. A historical category is included. Game will be scored using the VA Scoring System and will be entered into the Official Virginia Record Book. Entries will be accepted on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The doors open on Sunday at 10 a.m., awards at 3 p.m. This event is sponsored by Virginia Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Cemetery Preservation Workshop: Sign up to learn how to properly clean headstones and monuments. This will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Virginia’s oldest open cemetery. Volunteer spots available to the first 25 registrants. St. Lukes’ Education Coordinator Rachel Popp will lead volunteers about learning about and applying authorized headstone and monument cleaning techniques in the Ancient Cemetery. Sundays at Four: The concert series presents “The John Bullard Quartet — banjo, violin, cello and piano” in Christ Episcopal Church, 111 S. Church St., downtown Smithfield. John Bullard has gained international attention for his work in developing and transcribing classical repertoire for the five string banjo.
