ISLE OF WIGHT

Isle of Wight County Attorney Mark Popovich gave his resignation to the county’s Board of Supervisors on Aug. 16 during their regular scheduled meeting. His resignation will become effective on Friday, Aug. 31.

Popovich said he intends to take a position with Guynn & Waddell, a Salem-based law firm that specializes in representing and defending counties, cities, towns and other state and local government entities in legal challenges.

Per the terms of his separation agreement with Isle of Wight County, Popovich has agreed to continue to work with the county in an advisory capacity for the next four months. This, he said, would be on a paid basis and allow him to continue working on behalf of the county in two lawsuits by International Paper against the municipality — one of which concerns machinery and tools taxes and the other, real estate taxes.

Assistant County Administrator Don Robertson said that the Board of Supervisors will likely make a decision regarding interim legal services during its meeting on Sept. 6.
