We’re not at all surprised that Danny Byrum, the Isle of Wight County Fair chairman, has also been named president of the Virginia Association of Fairs. Really, that was just a matter of time before he would be recognized for his leadership on the local level.

If what he’s done over the past several years to help improve the county fair is any indication, then the VAF — and therefore all such events statewide — will also benefit.

Such fairs and festivals are one of those things that towns and counties can point to with pride. They can show off in the best light for what they can offer. But to do so requires not only planning to handle logistics, budgets, etc., but also the leadership to make all that successfully happen.

An experienced person such as Byrum can offer insight to the VAF on how individual festival organizations can turn a meh event into a memorable one, which will have people looking forward to the next year.

We look forward to seeing what he’ll do during his term, as well as with the upcoming Isle of Wight this Sept. 13-16.
