Old-Fashioned County Breakfast: The Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 will host the meal from 7 to 10 a.m. in the post at 223 Washington St., across from the library and YMCA. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits, gravy, hash browns, corn bread, fried salt spot and mixed fruit will be featured. Coffee and juice are included with a $7 donation. An omelet to order is an additional $2. Children age 6-12 are $4 and children under 6 eat free. All proceeds go to support the many activities and programs of the post.

 

Saturday, Sept. 1

First Saturdays Artisan Market: Local artisans with unique specialties in stained glass creations, forged metal art, handmade brooms, handcrafted and repurposed furniture, silver jewelry, wearable art, herbal soaps, local writers and books, oil paintings, handcrafted pens, knit and crochet, quilts, folk art, pottery, carved and turned wood, handcrafted knives, Native American crafts, locally grown produce, craft demonstrations and more. The Nottoway Tribe of Virginia History Interpretive Exhibit is also available for view. This takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gallery 1606, corner of Highway 58 and Main Street, 18001 Southampton Parkway. Reservations are required for free vendor space. Free admission. Saturday, Sept. 8

Heritage Day: Heritage Day will be at Southampton Heritage Village/Agriculture and Forestry Museum on Heritage Lane, Courtland, from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The cost for adults is $5, school-age children $2, pre-schoolers are free. There will be running heritage equipment: saw mill, grist mill, printing press, large model train displays, plus hands-on trains for kids, a scavenger hunt, craft vendors, old cars, tractors, engines and music. Watercolor Pure and Simple: This class is for intermediate and advanced artists ages 16 and up, and will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9. Ken Hobson is the instructor. This will be a fun & relaxed opportunity to paint, offering a lot of information on a variety of subjects from loose florals to realistic landscapes, family pets to birds. Students are welcome to bring their own references too. Fee is $200 for Isle of Wight Arts League Members/ $220 for non-members. Tuesday, Sept. 11

Bingo night: The Walters Ruritan Club will have bingo night at 7 o’clock in the Walters Community Center. There will be food, drinks and instant bingos available for purchase. Doors open at 6 o’clock. For more information, call Mike Perry at 642-0833.

Meet local legislators: A meet-and-greet of representatives who vote on senior issues takes place from 9 to 11 a.m. in AmeriCare Plus, 13478 Carrolton Blvd. This program is free, but reservations are required.
