The following Windsor area students were recently recognized as Isle of Wight Achievers during the June meeting of the Isle of Wight County School Board.

Seventh grader Antonio Scott recently won the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Essay Contest for Georgie Tyler Middle School. He won a $25 gift card, a certificate, and attended an awards dinner. He wrote an essay that addressed the following question: In regards to the most recent shooting in Parkland, Florida on Feb. 14, 2018, parents and students are calling for stricter gun laws. Will these laws make us feel better or safer? Why or why not?

Several students from Windsor Elementary competed in the 33rd annual Great Computer Challenge, sponsored by the radio station WHRO and held at Old Dominion University on May 12. The Challenge is open to kindergarteners through fifth graders from across the Hampton Roads region. Taking first place in Level 2 Desktop Publishing were Maggie Baughman, Keegan Shannon and Grey Williams. They were coached by Sara Baughman and Elizabeth Littlefield.

In addition, Isle of Wight County Schools was recognized by WHRO with the Grace Little Technology Enthusiasm Award. WHRO initiated this award to recognize Grace’s persistent enthusiasm for technology and for promoting the use of technology through avenues such as the Great Computer Challenge, and to recognize the school who, in the spirit of Grace Little, demonstrates a high degree of enthusiasm for technology.

This year WHRO chose Isle of Wight County, which had an amazing turnout of 26 teams supported by 17 teachers from four schools.

In presenting the award, WHRO stated: “Isle of Wight County has clearly showed their passion this year through their attendance at the Great Computer Challenge. We thank all of you for the work you do to bring technology to your students and for your participation in the Great Computer Challenge.”

The coaches recognized with the award are: Jamie Ball, Laura Lilly, Charlene Hinshaw, Mallory Bradley, Heather Stafford, Timothy Bradley, Angela Thompson, William Austin, Sarah Butler, Sharon Chapman, Hattie Garrow, Michelle Pealo, Angela Pyrtle, DeNay Smith, Sara Baughman, Aubrie Ellis and Elizabeth Littlefield.

Finally, David, Tammy and Ray Edwards, owners of Windsor True Value, were nominated by Isle of Wight County Schools for inclusion in the Virginia School Boards Association’s Business Honor Roll for being a mainstay of Windsor and loyal, devoted supporter of Isle of Wight County Schools for many years. They have hosted Windsor Elementary students and given them a venue for sharing information on bees with the community, and contributed materials at low or no cost to Windsor High School’s building trades classes and land lab.
