Thomas W. Mastaglio, Ph.D.

SMITHFIELD

Thomas Challis, who attended Tabb High School in Yorktown, was sponsored by Smithfield Post 49 to participate in the American Legion Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Program.

He joined approximately 20 others cadets at the Virginia State Police Academy in Richmond from June 17-23. The program provides first-hand experiences and insight into the operations of law enforcement agencies. It also affords these highly motivated young people an opportunity to consider law enforcement as a potential career choice.

Cadets trained every morning leading to a 9-mile graduation run. Law enforcement procedures and challenges such as SWAT, K-9, building search, active shooter, high-risk stops and alcohol/drugs cases are discussed along with civics-related topics such as Americanism and citizenship.

In addition to the classroom and practical experience, cadets also have had the opportunity to visit the Governor’s Mansion, the Virginia War Memorial and attend a hosted lunch at a local Legion Post.
