Rescheduled Luminaria Ceremony. The Relay For Life of Isle of Wight/Surry will host the event at 9:30 o’clock tonight at Benn’s United Methodist Church, 14571 Benn’s Church Blvd., Smithfield.

 

Monday, June 18

JuliARTe Summer Camp: This will take place from 9 a.m. to noon through Friday, June 22. All materials included for daily art projects including painting, fiber art and jewelry with instruction by resident artist Juliette Marshall. Cost is $35 per day or $150 for entire week for IWAL members ($45/day, $160/week for non-members) Fee must be paid by Friday, June 8, to reserve your space. Bethlehem Jam: The Dallas Band will perform from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Bethlehem Ruritan Club House, 140 Manning Road, Suffolk. No admission charge, but donations to the tip jar go to the band so please give generously. Soft drinks, BBQ, hot dogs, snacks and desserts will be available for purchase. Old-Fashioned Country Breakfast: The Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 invite the community for the meal in the Post, 223 Washington St., across from the library and YMCA. Breakfast is served from 7 to 10 a.m. with a menu of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits, gravy, hash browns, corn bread, fried salt spot and mixed fruit. Coffee and juice are included with a $7 donation. Omelet to order is an additional $2. Children age 6-12 pay $4m and children under 6 eat free. All proceeds go to support the many activities and programs of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8545 in Smithfield.

Annual opioid epidemic symposium: Every day, more than 115 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids. Please join the PDCCC’s nursing class of 2019 for a viewing of the documentary Chasing the Dragon and a panel of speakers who have firsthand experience with the current opioid crisis. This symposium will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Workforce Development Center, Franklin. Refreshments will be provided.

Live music: The community is invited to join Sgt. Jayton D. Patterson, USMC, VFW Post 4411for a live music event at 3385 Beaverdam Road, Franklin, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Charles Butler Hall. The featured band will be Otto Shelor and the Country Ravens, who will entertain at no charge; however, tips will be welcomed. Doors open at 6 p.m. There will be food and beverages available for purchase. This is a rain-or-shine event.

Treasures & Trades Show: The Carrsville Ruritan Club will host this in the community center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents are wanted to share their homemade crafts and goodies, or who are wanting to clean out their attics and share/sell their treasures. Vendors will include Origami Owl, Pampered Chef, Lula Roe, Thirty-One, Paparazzi and Scentsy. Estate and antique items also for sale. Mahone’s Tavern and Museum: The historic building will be open from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Mahone’s Tavern has witnessed and been a part of much of the history of Southampton County, Virginia. Built on one of the original lots of Jerusalem in 1796, it is possibly the oldest house in present day Courtland and is one of the oldest houses in Southampton County. Come and visit the boyhood home of William Mahone and the museum it has now become. Located at 22341 Main St. in historic downtown Courtland, the tavern is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

 

Tuesday, July 3/Wednesday, July 4

Fireworks: Isle of Wight County will host two fireworks shows in celebration of the Fourth of July. The first will be on Tuesday, July 3 at Clontz Park in Smithfield. The second will be on Wednesday, July 4 at Windsor High School. The American Fireworks Company will be displaying both fireworks shows and all shows will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. or dark. First Saturdays Artisan Market: Local artisans with unique specialties in scented candles, wearable art, stained glass, oil paintings, herbal soaps, jewelry, quilts, metal art, handcrafted pens, turned wood, pottery, Native American art, photography, folk art, repurposed furniture, Native American tacos, craft demonstrations. This month, the Foster Spain Band will perform folk, fusion and jazz. The Nottoway Tribe of Virginia History Interpretive Exhibit is also available for view. This takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gallery 1606, corner of Highway 58 and Main Street, 18001 Southampton Parkway. Reservations are required for free vendor space. Free admission.
