WINDSOR

Over 500 runners competed in Windsor High School’s annual 5K race on Friday.

This year, participants included students from Georgie D. Tyler Middle School, Windsor High School, Westside Elementary School, Smithfield Middle School, as well Isle of Wight County Schools central office staff and members of the community. The race began at 10 a.m. on the high school’s track and continued down Church Street to Twin Circle. Participants then about-faced and headed back up Church Street to finish back at the WHS stadium.

Prior to the start of the race, Aurora Jensen presented the colors on horseback. She is a Windsor High School student who routinely participates in rodeos. The Windsor High School chorus then performed the National Anthem.

Lynn Briggs, spokeswoman for Isle of Wight County Schools, said that the annual event began several years ago at Georgie D. Tyler Middle School as a way to promote physical fitness among the students and give them something to work toward and train for. From there, it evolved into a friendly competition between the various county schools.

Results of the race were not available by press time.
