SMITHFIELD

On Tuesday evening, Isle of Wight County’s Chamber of Commerce and Arts League hosted a joint student art show and Business After Hours reception in the Arts Center @ 319 in downtown Smithfield. The event, which was held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., featured pieces by students and art teachers at each of the county’s public schools.

According to Arts Center Director Shiela Gwaltney, the Arts Center holds a show of works by Isle of Wight County Schools students and teachers annually, but this was the first year the reception for that event coincided with the Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours reception.

Andrew Cripps, president and CEO of the Chamber, said that the decision to combine the two events this month was made partly from an efficiency standpoint, since the two events fell within the same month, and partly to introduce the local business community to the county’s arts educators so that they could gain a better understanding of the resources available to students. The purpose of the Business After Hours reception is to give current and prospective Chamber members a chance to network

The artwork will be on display through the end of April.
