Windsor student takes first place in Tidewater Regional Art Contest

Isle of Wight County School Board members were treated to an impressive display of creativity and faced some tough decisions in selecting the 2018 winners of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Tidewater Regional Art Contest on March 19. Student art from the elementary, middle, and high school levels represented each school division in the competition, which was judged at the regional forum for area school board members.

Local student Autumn Watson from Windsor Elementary School was the elementary school winner. Watson is a fourth grader in Emily’s Bradshaw’s art class.
“The contest showcases the best art work from each division in the region,” said Superintendent Dr. Jim Thornton. “This is the second year we have had two of our entries place, including a first place. I am extremely proud of our students and congratulate them on their outstanding talent.”
“I am excited and happy, now people can see my work and be inspired,” Watson said of her award.
“Autumn Watson is an amazingly talented artist and student,” Bradshaw said. “Her interpretation of Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers highlights her creativity, skill, and dedication. I’m incredibly proud of her and what she has accomplished. I look forward to more wonderful art from her in the future.”

The second entry to place was by seventh grader Kierra Christensen from Smithfield Middle School. She took second place in the middle school category. Kevin Segner is her art teacher.
The VSBA Regional Art Contest was started in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia’s public school students. For each of the nine VSBA regions, a winner is chosen for the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The winning art is framed and displayed in the offices of the VSBA in Charlottesville and the Richmond offices of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
