It doesn’t speak well of adults when their words and actions — or more pointedly their inactions — prove ineffective in protecting children, especially at schools. So, apparently it’s left for the students to stand up and challenge the adults and laws that enable people to readily obtain assault weapons, and then shoot children and teachers in schools for whatever evil or insane reason goes through their diseased minds.

Such is the situation in Parkland Florida a week after the mass shooting of 17 people at Stoneman Douglas High School. Those classmates who weren’t physically hurt aren’t just wringing their hands and crying over the loss of classmates, friends and faculty. They are calling out lawmakers such as Sen. Mark Rubio (R-Fla.) on the carpet asking what they will do to help prevent yet another massacre. They are calling for bans on the kind of weapon and ammo used in the recent school massacre.

Whether or not you, or we, agree with their demands, these young people are quickly becoming active in a way few, if anyone, could imagine. We expect to see such activity to become an inspiration for students and responsible adults everywhere in the country. We anticipate that when the children come of voting age, they’ll remember who did and who didn’t work harder to better protect them.
