February is a month to learn, honor and celebrate the achievements of black men and women throughout history. In Isle of Wight County, individuals have made their mark in industry, agriculture, public service, education, sports and more.

Much like the museum’s recently published online exhibit about Isle of Wight County During World War I and World War II, the museum would like to document a more detailed history of the African-American experience in the county.

To do that, the museum need your help, Share your stories with the museum. Email, call or visit to drop off photographs, memories and documents to help the museum preserve this important element of our county’s history.

Interpreting local history, the museum’s exhibits include prehistoric fossils, Native American and Colonial artifacts, a country store and the museum’s most notable artifact — the world’s oldest, edible cured ham. The 1902 pork product exemplifies the patented Smithfield curing process.

The museum, 103 Main St., is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
