Isle of Wight County Schools is pleased to announce that its school board has been named as the Virginia School Boards Association’s 2017 Board of Distinction. The board was selected by a panel of judges based on their achievement in four key areas: planning, policy, promotion, and board development.

“I am very proud of the performance of our school board and school division,” said Alvin Wilson, IWCS school board chairman. “The school board and division staff continue to work to achieve maximum results to meet the needs of the students in Isle of Wight County.”

Each year, the Virginia School Board Association identifies school boards that will be designated as a VSBA Board of Distinction. Boards must apply for the designation and must meet specific requirements in four key areas. A panel of judges review the criteria submitted and determine those awarded the VSBA Board of Distinction status. IWCS board members were recognized on November 15 at the VSBA Annual Convention.

“Our school board is very deserving of this honor,” said Division Superintendent Dr. Jim Thornton. “I appreciate their dedication to the families and employees of Isle of Wight County Schools. Their collaborative efforts in support of our vision and mission are leading to incredible opportunities for our students.”

The Virginia School Boards Association is a voluntary, nonpartisan organization of Virginia school boards, with the goal of promoting excellence in public education through advocacy, training and services. The Association offers conferences, information, training, and counseling designed to meet the needs of the Commonwealth’s educational leaders.
