First IW Achievers of school year recognized

Isle of Wight Achievers for September included the faculty and staff of Windsor Elementary School for their winning entry in the Isle of Wight County Fair hay bale competition in the school category.

Specific Windsor Elementary faculty and staff members recognized for their work on the school’s winning hay bale entry, titled “This Little Piggy Rode Every Ride,” were Jill Duck, Debra Moore, Caitlyn McCormick, Jennifer Ayers, Gwen Carter and Chrissy Bynum.
This year’s first seniors of the month were Tisha Copeland of Windsor High School and Dionte Brown of Smithfield High.
“Tisha is the total package: a scholar, a leader, a citizen,” said Lynn Briggs, the division’s director of gifted services, community and media relations during the presentation. “She leads people without being demanding. She shows examples of kindness and empathy each day. She’s a social justice advocate, helping to expose other students to examples of fairness. Her goals are apparent to those around her. She wants to always do her best and she helps others to achieve that same goal.
“Tisha, as SGA President, organized major events at the beginning of the new school year. She led the orientation for freshmen as they entered WHS, and she has organized and executed a wonderful WHS homecoming. Her leadership has inspired renewed spirit and energy in our building.”

“Tisha is everything one could want in a student; she has focus, determination and real grit,” said her English teacher and senior class sponsor, Luann West Scott. “She has a clear vision of her future and is willing to sacrifice to make that vision come to fruition. Even more, she’s just a fine young woman, caring and kind.”
Tisha plans to attend a university — Howard and George Mason top her list. She then plans to go to law school.
Brown was recognized for coming to school every day, always prepared to work, despite working many late nights at Farm Fresh, and for his performance on Smithfield’s baseball team since eighth grade. He plans to study kinesiology in college and also hopes to play baseball at the college level.
